Ukrainian people have been coming to America for quite some time, but- there are three different time periods that Ukrainians immigrated to America.

THE FIRST WAVE OF UKRAINIAN IMMIGRATION
The first wave of Ukrainian Immigration happened during the late 19th century (starting 1877- the beginning of WW2). During this period, about 350,000 Ukrainian Immigrants came to America. The main reason for the Ukrainians coming to America is because they dreamed of prosperity and happiness. People would take ships in steerage and leave their families at home- just for wealth. When these people came, most of them went to cities like Cleveland, Akron, Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Chicago, and Detroit, as well as in Pennsylvania cities. When they got there, most of these Ukrainians took jobs like working in Pennsylvanian mines, factories, steel mills, and foundries. Ukrainians tended to move into little villages near other Slavs, Poles, Jews, and Slovaks. Their lives started to center around that town, where the neighborhood church, saloon, general store, and boarding houses were.

THE SECOND WAVE OF UKRAINIAN IMMIGRATION: BETWEEN THE WORLD WARS
The second period of immigration for these Ukrainians were between the two World Wars (1919- 1939). During this period, not too many Ukrainian Americans came to America, only 15,000. During this time, the push factor was mostly that Europe had collapsed during WW1. Ukrainian Americans were under the rule of Nazi German and the Soviet Union at the time, which was definitely not a comfortable spot. Even though Ukraine had been going through a lot during this time, because of immigration restrictions, most of these immigrants went to W. Europe, Canada, and Australia. The pull factors of this time had also been more money and glory. When people during this time came to America, most made their way to Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Illinois. When they got there, they started to work in big factories.

THE THIRD WAVE: DISPLACEMENT AFTER WW11
In the third period of immigration to the US, many more people started to pile in from Ukraine. Between 1947 and 1951, 80,000 people came to the United States from Ukraine. Most of these came to America because the Soviet Government had ruled Ukraine. Most people from Russia were also displaced after the war, they were left with nothing. They hoped to come to America and find more money. When they had came to America, they particularly settled in New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, and Cleveland. They would start jobs that required brains like doctors, lawyers, and engineers.
